Black Static has now reached its 4 th issue and this one contains a story, Salt, by Manchester's Nicholas Royle. It also features another Manchester author Conrad Williams with a story and interview. Conrad started his fiction writing career with short stories in Black Static's earlier incarnation, The Third Alternative. Now he has 3 novels to his credit.
Unfortunately Black Static has no retail distribution as yet but copies can be obtained via the website and I hope to bring issues to Manchester in the near future. I'll post detail when confirmed.
Black Static is TTA Press's new horror genre magazine. It can be gory but not gratuitously so.
Issue 4 contents are:
Fiction:
Cleaning the Western Kittiwake by Tyler Keevil
Atwater by Cody Goodfellow
Zombie by Conrad Williams
Salt by Nicholas Royle
Ye Shall Eat in Haste by Steve Nagy
This Much I Remember by Barry Fishler
Non Fiction:
White Noise (news compiled by Peter Tennant)
Electric Darkness by Stephen Volk
Blood Spectrum by Tony Lee (DVD reviews and competitions)
Case Notes by Peter Tennant (Conrad Williams interviewed plus book reviews, sidebars, factoids and featurettes)
Japan’s Dark Lanterns by John Paul Catton
Night’s Plutonian Shore by Mike O’Driscoll
Black Static is published bimonthly. Subscribe now! _________________ Fiction magazines: Interzone, Black Static & Crimewave, (E Reader editions at 'Fictionwise')

I'll quote a recent reader's view. Completely unsolicited and you can check it out here.
| Quote: | Received my BS4 today and I've just finished 'This Much I Remember' having read 'Atwater', 'Zombie', and 'Salt' earlier this evening.
'This much...' is an absolute triumph. I'm not 100% sure why it's in BS but I'm so glad it is. It blew me away, I've still got goosebumps- there perhaps I've answered myself! The story gripped me, upset me, crushed me, grabbed my heart and wrapped it in knots. Fabulous and totally not what I was expecting to find inside the covers of my beloved Black Static. I applaud you Mr Fishler!
I enjoyed 'Zombie' too although it was too short and I recognised far too much of myself in it.
'Atwater' was a tour de force that I enjoyed immensely right up until the reveal. I have to admit I was a bit miffed at the author for resorting to this much used and abused vehicle, especially with what had gone before. Had the ending been a little more original and (to me at least) less predictable, it would have been my favourite story of the last twelve months. Even so it was a cracking read that was so vivid I felt I was watching a special effects laiden movie. Wow! |

The fifth issue of Black Static has been out 3 weeks now. It has a thread of H P Lovecraft in its veins.
Last year was the 70th anniversary of Lovecraft's death (15/3/1937) hence Christopher M. Cevasco's Lovecraftian tale of HPL on his deathbed in "Less A Dream Than This We Know" and a review of "The Necronomicon; The Best Weird Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft".
The issue also has 'Slap' from Gary McMahon, whose novel 'Rain Dogs', due out from Humdrumming Books, is reviewed by Pete Tennant.
Pete Tennant interviews Bram Stoker Award winner Jack Ketchum who is celebrated for his horror fiction and thillers in the US, perhaps less so in the UK.
Zombies, Ghosts?, HPL, Jack Ketchum and Joel Lane don't miss Black Static 5 _________________ Fiction magazines: Interzone, Black Static & Crimewave, (E Reader editions at 'Fictionwise')
