SOUTHBANK CENTRE POETRY INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
Reply to: workplacement@southbankcentre.co.uk
Deadline for applications: 13th March 2008.

THINK POETRY IS ONLY IN BOOKS?

It’s on stage in the words accompanied by great classical and
contemporary music. It’s in art galleries engraved into stone. It’s
written by security guards in quiet moments late at night. It’s
everywhere!

If you can see the above vision, an internship with Southbank Centre
is an opportunity to join the team for a unique project working with
poet Lemn Sissay and the Poetry Library. We are currently recruiting
for the six-month placements starting in March 2008. Lemn Sissay is
artist in residence at Southbank Centre from June 2007 to July 2008.
He plans to edit an anthology of all the poetry that has been
performed, shown and chosen at Southbank Centre during the twelve
months of his residency. This may include song lyrics, poetry volumes
and magazines received by the Poetry Library, spoken word events,
visual art exhibitions, new poems written here, or choices made by the
general public.

What you can expect from us:
We can offer you the opportunity to play a key role in this unique
creative project. Collecting and archiving the poetry that has been
present during the first year of the newly relaunched Southbank Centre
is an intriguing way of getting to know this unique cultural centre.
It also provides opportunities to develop editorial, archival and
publishing skills. The placement will involve:

Insight into the artistic vision and practice of Southbank Centre,
through liaison with the Arts departments to track down poetry as it
appears across the artistic programme.

Editorial experiences researching and requesting relevant copyright
permissions for eventual publication.

Working with Poetry Library staff to select poems collected by the
Library in various forms, and researching the full text of fragments
of poems collected.

Practical experience and collaboration with the Poetry Librarians to
create a system for logging poems used across the Centre that is easy
to search and browse.

Creative direction from artist in residence Lemn Sissay, and working
closely with Poetry Library and Learning and Participation staff.

You will receive on-the-job training and gain a good understanding of
the practical side of archival, library and editorial work. The post
is voluntary so we are not able to pay you a salary, but we will
compensate travel expenses within London (up to £13.80 per day).

What we expect from you:
You will have a strong interest in and some knowledge of poetry and
potentially other art forms. You will have a working knowledge of
Microsoft Office and Internet, good communication skills and an
interest in libraries. You will be prepared to commit 1.5 to 3 days a
week for a period of up to six months work.

Deadline for applications: 13th March 2008.
