For the first time at the Poetry School, a week of short workshops in
the summer. Write new poems, translate poems or perform them. Come for
a half-day or a whole week – these short bursts of inspiration will
keep your poems humming all summer.

• All workshops take place at the Poetry School classrooms, 81
Lambeth Walk, London SE11 6DX. Nearest tube stations – Lambeth North
and Waterloo
• Book any combination of workshops – or all three (Translating the
Poem, The Prose Poem and Giving Good Readings) for the reduced price
£200 (£120 concs)
Translating the Poem with Graham Fawcett
Monday 14th & Tuesday 15th July
10.30am-4.30pm
£80 (£50 concessions)

A short introduction to the principles and practice of translating
poetry. Over two days, you’ll make new English versions of poems from
French, Latin, Welsh and Japanese. No previous knowledge of these
languages is needed, Graham will provide specially compiled 100%
vocabulary sheets, and guide you through thoughts about idiom,
metaphor, pun, rhyme and syllable-count. You’ll also be encouraged to
respond creatively to the text, letting it take you towards versions
or imitations or where you will. Published versions of the poems will
be provided at the end of each session for comparison and discussion,
and there will be opportunities to read your finished and unfinished
work.

The Prose Poem with Carrie Etter
Wednesday 16th & Thursday 17th July
10.30am-4.30pm
£80 (£50 concessions)

Poetry in prose offers an approach to the poem very different from
that in lines, widening a poet's range and often thereby improving
productivity. On Wednesday, Carrie will discuss prose poetry through
intriguing examples as well a writing exercise. These will be examples
she’s not used before at the Poetry School, so if you’ve already
started to study the form with Carrie, there will be plenty of new
discoveries to make. On Thursday, Carrie will address humour and the
surreal in prose poetry, again with delightful examples and an
exercise, and during both days, there will be plenty of opportunity
for feedback. The workshop will take place in the classroom and –
sunshine permitting – around and about the Lambeth Walk area.

Giving Good Readings with Mimi Khalvati
Saturday 19th July
1.30-5.30pm
£46 (£30 concessions)

Whether you’re building up to your first open-mic reading, or you’ve
been booked for a headline spot in a poetry festival, proper reading
skills help your page poems flourish in a stage setting. Audiences
love a confident reader, and Mimi will help you develop this
confidence through role-play and practice. Student numbers are kept
low in this workshop (no more than 10) so Mimi can pass on her ideas
and experience with lots of individual attention. Please bring two or
three of your own poems to work on. Please note that Mimi won’t be
covering microphone technique in this workshop. Suitable for all
levels of experience.
